A Dowty washer (also known as a bonded seal) is a composite sealing component used to create a leak-free, high-pressure seal around screws, bolts, and threaded fittings in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

Key Features and Composition

Structure: It consists of a hard metal outer ring and an inner elastomeric ring that acts as a gasket.
Materials: The outer ring is typically made of steel, zinc-plated steel, or stainless steel. The inner ring is usually made of Nitrile rubber (NBR) for standard applications, or Viton (FKM) for high-temperature needs.
Self-Centering Design: Many come with an extra lip or protrusion that ensures perfect alignment during assembly, preventing the rubber from becoming trapped or damaged.

How It Works

When the bolted connection is tightened, the metal ring limits the compression of the elastomer, compressing it to form a tight, positive seal against the mating flat surfaces. The metal outer ring prevents the seal from being over-tightened or deformed.
